Sprinkler valve boxes are supposed to remain accessible, but years of turf growth, mulch, landscaping changes, and previous repairs can make them surprisingly difficult to find. Random digging is rarely the best first move.
Why sprinkler valves become buried
Valve boxes can settle below grade, get covered by sod, disappear beneath mulch, or simply be forgotten when a property changes owners. Older irrigation systems may also have several valve boxes scattered around the property.
Start with the controller wiring
Each electric valve normally has a station wire running back toward the irrigation controller along with a common wire. Following that electrical path can provide clues about where the valve is located.
Professional valve locating and wire tracing
Specialized locating equipment can place a signal on an irrigation wire and help trace its route through the property. This can dramatically reduce the area that needs to be inspected or dug.
Signs you may have a valve problem
- One zone does not run
- A zone remains on
- The controller reports a fault
- A solenoid needs replacement but the valve box cannot be found
- Several wires disappear underground with no visible valve box
