Why Is Water Pooling Around My Sprinkler Head?

A puddle around a sprinkler head does not always mean the head itself is bad. The location and timing of the water can help identify whether the problem is a head, fitting, pipe, valve, or drainage issue.

Pooling while the zone is running

If water rapidly collects while the zone operates, inspect the head for cracks and watch the soil around its base. A broken fitting or lateral pipe below the head can release far more water than the nozzle itself.

Pooling after the system shuts off

Water that continues to appear after the zone stops may simply be draining from a low point in the piping. If it continues for an unusually long time, however, a valve may not be closing completely.

Look for pressure changes

A significant underground leak often causes other heads on the same zone to spray weakly or fail to rise. Combining low pressure with a wet area is a strong reason to investigate the piping in that zone.

Do not ignore persistent leaks

Besides wasting water, an irrigation leak can erode soil, damage turf, create muddy areas, and make the rest of the zone perform poorly.
