Sprinkler Controller Says Fault or Error: What It Usually Means

Modern irrigation controllers can detect some electrical problems and display a fault or station error. The message is useful, but it does not by itself identify which component has failed.

Common causes of a station fault

  • Shorted or failing valve solenoid
  • Damaged field wire
  • Wet or corroded wire splice
  • Incorrect wiring at the controller
  • Controller station-output problem

Why replacing the controller may not help

If the fault is in the buried wiring or valve solenoid, installing a new timer leaves the underlying problem in place. Electrical testing can isolate the circuit before parts are replaced.

Intermittent faults can be harder to find

A connection may work when dry and fail after rain or irrigation. Wire tracing, resistance testing, and inspection of valve-box connections can help narrow down intermittent problems.
