How to Know If a Sprinkler Solenoid Is Bad

A solenoid converts the controller’s electrical signal into valve operation. When it fails, the zone may stop responding to the controller.

Typical symptoms

The valve may work manually but not electrically, or the controller may report a station fault.

Test before replacing

A broken wire, failed splice, common-wire problem, or controller output can look exactly like a bad solenoid.

Solenoids can often be replaced separately

If the valve body is serviceable and the correct part is available, replacing the solenoid may be sufficient.
