Sprinkler Winterization Mistakes That Can Lead to Freeze Damage

Sprinkler winterization is intended to reduce the amount of water vulnerable to freezing inside irrigation components. Problems occur when parts of the system are missed or the process is performed incorrectly.

Waiting too long

Scheduling after sustained freezing weather arrives increases the risk that vulnerable components have already been exposed to damaging conditions.

Assuming shutting off the water is enough

Closing the irrigation supply does not automatically remove water from valves, piping, heads, and exposed components.

Using uncontrolled air pressure

Compressed air must be managed appropriately for the system. More pressure is not automatically better and can damage irrigation components.

Missing zones or unusual system components

Larger systems, pumps, multiple backflow devices, or modified piping may require additional attention during winterization.
