Sprinkler Wire Tracing: How Technicians Find Broken Irrigation Wires

Irrigation valves are controlled by low-voltage wires running from the controller to valve boxes around the property. When those wires are cut, corroded, disconnected, or lost underground, electrical troubleshooting can save a great deal of unnecessary digging.

What wire tracing does

A transmitter can place a signal onto an irrigation conductor. A receiver then follows that signal through the property, helping a technician identify the approximate route of the wire.

Why irrigation wires fail

  • Landscape edging or digging cuts the cable
  • Old waterproof splices corrode
  • Rodents or construction damage the wire
  • Previous repairs leave undocumented wiring
  • Valve boxes become buried and inaccessible

Tracing can also help locate valves

Because station wires terminate at valve solenoids, following the wire path can help narrow down a buried valve location.

Electrical testing still matters

Tracing identifies where wiring travels; voltage, resistance, continuity, and solenoid testing help determine what has actually failed.
