Sprinkler Solenoid Problems: Symptoms, Testing and Repair

The solenoid is the electrical component mounted on an irrigation valve. When the controller energizes a station, the solenoid helps the valve open. A failed solenoid can make an otherwise healthy valve appear completely dead.

Common solenoid symptoms

  • One zone does not run from the controller
  • The valve operates manually but not electrically
  • The controller reports a station fault
  • The solenoid is physically damaged or has deteriorated wiring

A dead zone is not automatically a bad solenoid

The same symptom can be caused by a broken station wire, bad splice, controller output problem, common-wire fault, or mechanical valve problem. Diagnosis should test the circuit rather than simply replacing parts.

Can a solenoid be replaced without replacing the valve?

Often, yes. When the valve body and internal components are serviceable and the correct replacement is available, replacing the solenoid alone can be a practical repair.
